The Maya calendar divided time based on the coordinated movements of the sun, the moon, and the planet Venus. The b'sk'tun, the longest period of time in the Long Count Maya calendar, lasts nearly 395 years. The Maya calendar described the Fourth World as lasting for 13 b'ak'tun, ending in 2012. However, the Maya, like most native people, saw time as cyclical, so the end of the Fourth World implies the beginning of a Fifth World.
