Africa has the second-greatest area of any continent, behind its neighbor, Eurasia. It lies entirely in the eastern hemisphere and straddles the equator, with most of its landmass in the northern hemisphere. It lies primarily in the southern and eastern hemispheres. It stretches from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, and from Europe, the Arabian subcontinent, and the Mediterranean Sea in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south.
As the evolutionary homeland of human beings, Africa has the greater biological and cultural diversity in its human population than that found on any other continent.
