Cartilaginous fish
Cartilaginous fish have skeletons made of cartilage rather than bone (as opposed to bony fish). They once filled the seas, but the mass extinction of previous centuries hit them particularly hard. While many orders of fish remain, they have become more rare, surpassed in the Fifth World by cephalopods.
