Lizard
Lizards comprise a wide variety of squamate reptiles found all around the world.
The mass extinctions of previous centuries hit lizards particularly hard. As the world grew warmer, they found it more and more difficult to avoid overheating. While mammals -- including humans -- grew smaller to better dissipate body heat, the increased oxygen in the air allowed lizards to grow larger. Many lizards took this as their answer, to avoid overexertion and overheating by growing large enough to simply overpower their prey. While this has not resulted in a new era of dinosaurs (yet), one will find many larger reptiles (on the order of monitor lizards) all over the Fifth World.
#Human relations
People in the Fifth World hunt lizards for meat, and sometimes make bags or decorations from their skins.
#Lizard People
A community specializing in relationship with lizards likely practices hunting and gathering, hunting lizards along with a variety of other animals as they roam across their territory. Such a community must take great care not to over-hunt their prey, moving often and eating a wide variety of different plants and animals so as not to risk driving any of their local species into extinction. They may only hunt lizards during a specific time of year. Their wizard may go into a trance to negotiate with the Keeper of the Game how many lizards (and other animals) they may hunt in a season.
A community specializing in relationship with lizards may set small controlled burns to help locate lizards in tall grass or thick vegetation. This practice can easily get out of hand, requiring a cultural tradition of deep knowledge and respect for fire. When practiced with care and attention by people who know the land and how to use fire, it can not only help hunters find the lizards they seek, but strengthen the ecosystem as a whole by providing a patchwork of niches for a diverse variety of animals and plants. They may only use fire for this purpose, or they may at least occasionally practice gardening and also use it for swidden cultivation.
A community specializing in relationship with lizards likely respects them for their resilience, such as with the ability of some species of lizard to regrow their tails. Such a community may come to specialize in healing, or even become known for making high-quality prosthetics for people who have lost body parts. They may have a lizard figure in their mythology who represents resilience and rebirth.
