Awareness
Awareness forms the main currency of the game. We measure it in moments, which you should represent at the table with some kind of token. Your main character starts with five moments of awareness.
Main characters spend awareness to ask attentive questions and to activate certain ritual phrases. Usually, spending awareness means giving it to the place you find yourself at that moment, but we have a few exceptions:
- When you ask an attentive question about another main character, you pay your awareness to that main character, rather than the place. A main character can never have more than five moments of awareness at any given time, so if hen can’t receive that moment of awareness, it goes to the place instead.
- When you spend a moment of awareness on the ritual phrase “I can see…” the moment goes to one of the answers on the question.
- If you spend a moment of awareness at some location other than the places in the game, that moment of awareness leaves the game.
Places begin the game with one moment of awareness, and gain a new one each time you enter a new stage. They also gather the moments of awareness that main characters spend. When you pick a place to play at the beginning of the game, you set a criterion under which players will have the chance to gather awareness there. If a main character meets this criterion, hen can take as much awareness as the place has to offer, up to hens maximum capacity of five.
